Although, if we upload the 1024x1024-sized skins and, ingame, only 512x512 resizes are used, surely the game is downloading 1024x1024 resolution images from LFSW for skins, therefore the bandwidth usage of transferring a 1024x1024 image has already happened before the game resizes the skins?

Thus, allowing the game to display the skins without resizing them would make no difference to the bandwidth/size of files transferred.

Damn. I have just checked out my skins_x folder, seeing that the files there are 512x512.
This now bring about the question - does LFSW store the skin files in 512x512 resolution and send them out to clients at that resolution, or does the game receive them at 1024x1024 resize them to 512x512, saving them afterwards?

Quote from duke_toaster :IIRC it is acceptable if you cannot be arsed to use character map or cannot get umlauts to spell it Nuerburgring Norschleife.

Yep. Websites often replace umlauts with a suffixed 'e', as browsers don't like them. It's better than nothing

(I use ALT + 0 2 5 2 on the NumPad, which, interestingly, doesn't need to be turned on at the time)

I have no trouble at all reading the speedometer labels in any of the cars, apart from the Raceabout - when you do have trouble, all you need to do is lower your FOV so the dial appears bigger, read the numbers so you know which is where, and then zoom back out again

You don't need to know what the numbers are every time you read the dial, the position of the needle tells you all you need to know when you get used to the car. I dislike the digital readouts on the cars too, only in the single-seaters does it seem appropriate.

Using 1280x1024 resolution, the Raceabout is the only problematic car, thanks to its spectacularly tiny speedometer

Fair point - but that would only happen to one person when that one person joined the server - as your skins aren't downloaded from you, but from LFSW, it wouldn't affect you. So, if you don't join the race for a minute or so after connecting, it won't make a difference

If low FPS is an issue, you could turn off the high-resolution mode.

This does happen in some cars, but generally only older cars with rougher-running engines. The choke also affects it, be it manual or automatically adjusted. Just about every single car of this millenium has an engine control unit (ECU), which monitors the engine conditions pasibrzuch describes.

In LFS, the engine does dip below standard idle if it is damaged or worn out - rather like in real life, don't you think?

A word Riders Motion and XCNuse have missed from Crashgate's post is 'option'. He doesn't want us to be forced to have high-resolution skins from everyone being displayed, but for us to have the option to display them - which I think is a good idea. : +1

Now might be a good time to point out that the correct spelling of the track is Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Do not even try to tell me that the umlaut does not matter.

There's been some good points fielded, but although I'd love to be able to drive the Nordschleife in LFS, the costs (both financial and as far as workload is concerned) would be immense. It took development teams of hundreds to get it into games like GT4 - can you really expect three mortals (the term 'mortal' is disputable, I'm still staggered at how three people can create such a game) to do the same job? It's just not possible for a small team to render a thirteen-mile-long track to anything like being accurate within any reasonable time scale. It'd be nice to have (I'd certainly never become tired of it), but let's think about practicalities.

Is it possible to find drivers for just about any 'wheel on the market? The one I use is a (pretty cheap) Logic3, which was designed for the PlayStation 2. It works fine with the PC, using a USB adaptor, but I do not have analogue pedal input (ie, the throttle and brake function as on-off switches) or force feedback. I'm not terribly worried about the vibration, but having variable pedals would be a massive help. If there's some sort of link list for Logic3 'wheel drivers, or anything of that kind, I'd be very grateful.

At the moment, the best method I have of regulating the pedals is to change the Button Control Rate, basically giving me the ability to choose between hard, fast settings and softer, smoother ones. Not ideal for throttle control in a long corner

(Yes, I have tried selecting 'Combined' and 'Seperate' for the 'Throttle/Brake Axis' option, neither of these function at all)

It'd certainly make gearchanges more precise, too - I use manual clutch and no driver aids whatsoever, so throttle modulation would be a nice improvement.

I hope I'm not missing anything obvious or easy to find, but please let me know. Thanks.

Is there any way to reverse the starting order of a race that did have qualification? In other words, make the person who qualified fastest start at the back, and so on?

I noticed that just now. Damn, it seems I've become a victim of not checking things. In that case, how do you choose the fuel level for your AI cars? Does selecting 'AI use player setup' include your fuel level in their setup?

Quote from felplacerad :Remove all AI's from the grid, go to the garage and choose a car, setup and fill up the tank. Leave the garage and add the AI cars again.

A more reliable method is to save the setup you want the AI to use (including their fuel fill level) under the exact name of the AI car - for example, AI5 or, if you've renamed them, Bob or whatever. This way, the AI car will always use the setup saved in their name. The downside is, you need to have a setup for each AI car.

The same method can be used for their colour schemes.

Quote from pasibrzuch :There is no difference what AI skill is selected before adding them. Only matter which selection is before clicking 'START' and then every AI has the same skill.

I was quietly incredulous while reading this thread, and also doubted the theory - my main reason being that when you start the race, the AI skill level setting is shown in brackets after the race information that appears just before the start - it does not list the cars and their skills, so it seemed quite obvious that they would all have to be the same...

Cool.

Quote from noobie4ever :You are the 300mph madman right?

Yeah, something like that

Hope to catch you in a race sometime, is your racername the same as your username here?

noobie4ever - You wouldn't happen to be a member of the Gran Turismo forum GTPlanet with the same username, would you?

Thanks joen, I can see your point - You might catch me on S2 soon, then

One more question. In licensed LFS, do others' skins automatically download to your skins folder, or do you still have to have a copy of the skin placed manually into the folder?

Hi everyone,

I'm Sam, I've been a Demo racer for a few weeks now - just recently acquired a PS2-controller / USB port adaptor that allows me to use my 'wheel and pedals with LFS. And I love it
I'm definitely going to upgrade to a licensed copy soon, but do you think I should try out S1 before going into S2? Just wondering what your opinions on that are. Thanks

By the way, my current best lap at Blackwood GPC Forwards is 1'36.10 in the XFG, using the race_s setup (the only change being less powerful brakes, as my pedals are not analogue when used through the PC).
